SVC to host Back to School Blessing event on August 13

Back to School Blessing guests

Children and families gearing up for school at last year’s Back to School Blessing event

“Skagit Valley College is focused on excellence and providing access to higher education for everyone in our community,” said SVC President Dr. Tom Keegan. “As we welcome a new generation of learners onto our campus, we are planting seeds that the dream of a college education is within their reach.”

The start of the 2016 school year will be a lot brighter for about 1,200 students and their families, thanks to the generosity of many Skagit County Christian churches who are sponsoring this year’s “Back to School Blessing” event on Saturday, August 13th. Skagit Valley College (SVC) will again serve as the host location for this year’s event, which will take place from 8:30-11:30 am at the Tollefson Plaza, located at Lewis Hall on SVC’s Mount Vernon Campus, 2405 E. College Way.

Families and their children will receive a free pancake breakfast, a backpack filled with school supplies, gently used school clothing, dental hygiene supplies, and a grocery package provided by the Neighbors in Need Food Bank, and Helping Hands Food Bank. In addition, area organizations will be on-site to offer support services to guests. In serving as the location host this year, SVC bilingual staff will join the fun activities planned for the children, including art projects and music. Also, SVC enrollment services staff members will be available to help family members who are interested in enrolling for fall quarter classes.
