The Skagit Valley College Public Information Office takes the lead in the planning and production of external communications for SVC, helping to coordinate the official voice of the college. These activities include institutional print and electronic publications, promotional materials, ad campaigns, social media, as well as interactions with the news media. Our core projects include enrollment marketing promotional and informational pieces for the the College district for Academic Pathways, Professional/Technical Programs, Basic Education for Adults, and Enrollment Services.

Whidbey Island & South Whidbey held 89th Annual Commencement

OAK HARBOR, Wash. — Skagit Valley College (SVC) held its 89th Annual Commencement on June 17th in the Oak Harbor High School gym. Facts and figures about the Class of 2016, district wide are:DSC_0048

  • There are 1,678 degrees, certificates, and diplomas being awarded to 1,243 students this year:
    • 978 from Mount Vernon
    • 257 from Whidbey
    • 8 from San Juan
  • 581 Academic Degrees being awarded
    • 429 Mount Vernon
    • 147 Whidbey
    • 5 San Juan
  • 935 Professional/Technical Degrees & Certificates,
    • 769 Mount Vernon
    • 164 Whidbey
    • 2 San Juan
  • And 142 high school diplomas including 54 from our High School 21+ program.
    • 109 Mount Vernon
    • 31 Whidbey
    • 2 San Juan
  • Graduates range from 16 to 72 years of age.
  • 112 Running Start students:
    • 80 Mount Vernon Running Start
    • 31 Whidbey Running Start
    • 1 San Juan Running Start
  • SVC has international students graduating this year from Australia, Brazil, China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
  • 11 students, representing the inaugural class of the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Conservation program, graduated this year.

SVC President Dr. Tom Keegan presented the Associated Students of Skagit Valley College (ASSVC) Gavel Award to ASSVC President Joseph Shea (Sedro-Woolley). Since first enrolling at SVC in 2010, Joseph has earned a Geographical Information Systems Certificate, an Associate in Arts in Environmental Science, and most recently, he was among the inaugural class of 11 students who earned their Bachelor of Applied Science in Environmental Conservation degrees this year. In addition to his studies, Joseph was involved in many College activities including the Diversity Committee, Safety Committee, Tenure Review Committee, and the S&A Budget Committee.

Tami Mattox (Mount Vernon), Allied Health instructor, received the 2016 Teacher of the Year Award. This annual award is voted on and bestowed by the SVC student body and recognizes a faculty member for outstanding teaching in the classroom. In the nominations by students, Tami was recognized for being very responsive to her students and dedicated to their success. She is involved in the classrooms and beyond, supporting club activities and campus events, interacting with students throughout the day, and playing an important role in the community at SVC.

SVC Community Education program enrolling for summer workshops

SVC’s 89th Commencement is coming up!

DSC_0055Skagit Valley College will conduct the College’s 89th Annual Commencement Ceremonies in June.  Family and friends are invited to attend; tickets are not required.  The dates, times, and locations are as follows:

  • The Mount Vernon Campus commencement ceremony will take place Thursday, June 16
    at 6:30 pm in the Dave DuVall Pavilion.
  • The Whidbey Island Campus commencement ceremony will take place Friday, June 17
    at 6:30 pm in the Oak Harbor High School Gym.
  • The San Juan Center commencement ceremony will take place Wednesday, June 15
    at 1:00 pm at The Brickworks in Friday Harbor.
